Welcome! In this month's issue Andy and Jamie
discuss the benefits of Massage.

Boxing training can be some of the most physically demanding, yet rewarding training. The importance of rest and recovery between workouts can be just as important as your training session. To assist in muscle and joint health, a really great addition to your routine needs to include massages.

joints and trigger inflammation. Slow, direct deep pressure or friction applied across the grain of the muscle tissue is employed. Some discomfort and pain is associated with this type of massage and often stiffness and soreness may result the following day. It is always recommended to tell the therapist if something hurts or the pain is outside of your comfort zone.

Swedish Massage: The Swedish massage is the best-known type of massage and if you have never had a massage before, it is a perfect place to start. The Swedish physician Pir Henrik Ling, developed this technique in the 1700’s to relax muscles. It involves kneading, rubbing, friction, stretching and sometimes tapping the muscle tissue and is performed in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart. Firm, but gentle pressure promotes relaxation, and eases muscle tension. The

Andy & Jamie's Fitness Tip:
Benefits of Massage

There a number of benefits associated with massages. Massages simulate blood circulation, lower the heart rate and blood pressure, reduce swelling and promote faster healing due to more effective delivery of nutrition to the cells and the removal of cellular waste products.

Massages lengthen the muscle tissue, assists in lubricating between the muscle fibers and joints, thus help reduce pain and stiffness. By lengthening a short, tight muscle through restorative muscle therapy, the tension and extra energy required to keep the muscle tight can be freed up, and this allows easier movement and reduces injuries. A massage is also a great way to reduce stress and remove the chemicals produced by stress, (cortisol and adrenaline), from the body. A less intense massage also, can calm the mind and give a sense of overall well-being. Massage therapy can be a form of body maintenance and preserving good health and will give the largest payback when they are regular. If, though, you can only make a commitment to have a massage a few times a year, the healing nature of massages will still be very effective.

Types of
Therapeutic Massage:

Sports Massage: A type of therapy geared toward athletes

to prepare their bodies for optimal performance, to function well during training and recovery after events. Proper sports massages should concentrate on increasing range of motion and flexibility, relieving muscle soreness, and promoting a quick recovery from muscle overuse. The massage can be preformed either before or after a workout to stimulate muscle function and increase flexibility. A sports massage is a good choice if you have a specific problem, such as an injured shoulder or knee. The therapist will focus on the problem area, rather than giving a complete full-body massage. Using the same techniques as the Swedish massage, it also includes breaking down adhesions (knots in the muscle).

Deep Tissue Massage: This type of massage is especially helpful for recurrent tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, tight low backs, and sore shoulders. It focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue by breaking down adhesions in the muscles, tendons or ligament areas. Adhesions cause the feeling of pain, block normal blood circulation, reduce movement of the muscles and

Balazs Track System for Heavy Bags
Massage (continued)

Swedish massage is the basic foundation for the other types of Western massage.

Shiatsu Massage: This is a traditional hands-on therapy originating in Japan. The therapist uses pressure from the thumbs, fingers and palms to apply pressure to specific areas of the body. Tapping, squeezing, rubbing and pressure are applied to numerous acupressure points, releasing toxins and stress and promoting improved blood circulation.

How Often?

A minimum of once per month is recommended, however if you are experiencing chronic pain or a specific injury you may want to increase the number and type of massage you have to ensure the muscles stay pliable and in good shape.

The Balazs Track System transforms any room into a boxing studio in a matter of seconds. Heavy bags glide effortlessly through the room on a ceiling mounted track. Move bags from storage area to workout area and back.

Transform any room
into a boxing studio
in seconds.

Creating a dedicated room for boxing or kickboxing classes can be expensive. A multi-purpose space is ideal—but punching bags are heavy and awkward to handle and time consuming to hang and store on a daily basis. The Balazs Track System transforms any room into a boxing studio in a matter of seconds. Heavy bags glide effortlessly through the room from storage area to workout area and back.

The Balazs Track System consists of a ceiling-mounted track and movable trolleys that suspend heavy bags. A centrally located switch operates a brake in each trolley that either locks the trolley in position or allows the bag to move freely along the track.

Balazs Track System
Design the layout of the track to meet your facility’s needs. The ceiling mounted tracks can bend around corners and extend into closets to hide bags when not in use. Whether you are deploying one bag or twenty, the Balazs Track System is the perfect solution.

Contact Balazs or your local Balazs dealer for help creating the layout that works best for you.
